Waxman - Carmen Fantasy for Violin & Piano; ft. Brian Krinke, Violin & Maxwell Reilly, Piano
This performance of the Carmen Fantasy by Franz Waxman was recorded on 9/8/2025 in Love Recital Hall at Colorado Mesa University, featuring CMU Violin Faculty Brian Krinke, with Maxwell Reilly on the piano.
Franz Waxman was a very successful composer of concert and film music, and this music was originally composed for the fim "Humoresque," starring Bette Davis as the doomed love interest of a violinist.
Waxman originally had Jascha Heifetz in mind to play the music, but Isaac Stern filled on on the soundtrack, when Heifetz wasn't available. However, Waxman later expanded the Carmen music for Heifetz, who recorded the new arrangement and performed it many times.
There are many violin arrangements of music from the opera Carmen, notably, Sarasate, Hubay, Drdla, and ever John Phillip Sousa, but this version is arguably the best, and most virtuosic.
