Toccata from Pour le Piano by Debussy

By Claude Debussy and arranged for solo violin by Brian Krinke.

The Debussy Toccata is a fantastic showpiece for the piano, and now it can be a virtuosic showstopper for the violin! It is a challenging, but fun rendition of a terrific work.

Little Suite for Violin

Little Suite for Violin is a set of whimsical character pieces for solo violin. The four movements are:

  1. Declaration

  2. Song

  3. Swarm

  4. Waltz

The short pieces can be performed as a set or separately, and the entire duration is about 8 minutes. They are intended for professional performers or advanced students.

The Little Match Seller

The Little Match Seller is written for String Trio (vln, vla, clo) and is based on the sad Christmas tale be Hans Christian Andersen. The piece follows the structure of the story, alternating between the sad realities of the match girl’s winter night, and her fantastical visions when she strikes the matches to keep warm. This piece was premiered on 1/9/2026 with the composer on violin, along with Amelia Krinke, viola, and Laura Sewell, Cello.

Six Concert Etudes

These etudes can be performed separately, or as a set. They address some extreme challenges on the violin, but each is also meant to portray a different mood, from the pyrotechnics of Etude Velocity, to the sinister feeling of the Etude Chromatic Double Stops, to the ethereal Etude Harmonics. These etudes were premiered in Love Recital Hall at Colorado Mesa University in November 2021

Wedding Canyon

Wedding Canyon is a depiction of a place in the Colorado National Monument, detailing sights and sounds, both real and imaginary.

Picture a walk through this canyon, with sounds of birds, under the bright Colorado sky, leading to a dramatic geological feature, Independence Monument. Scenes of climbers, animals, and a ghost wedding, represented by the waltz at the center of the piece. John Otto, the father of the Monument was married at the base, and his presence is still felt there today., in the trails, stairways and roads he created.

his music was written to perform with the fabulous cellist, Laura Sewell, at the Landmark Center in St. Paul, Minnesota and was premiered there on 1/16/2025

Five Moods

Five Moods for Oboe and Violin is the second piece I have written to perform in collaboration with my colleague, William Aikens, oboe professor at Colorado Mesa University. Each piece has a very different character, and I explored some unusual techniques, including multi phonics for the oboe, and extensive use of violin harmonics in the last movement.

Colorado Sketches

Colorado Sketches is a set of piano pieces, each one evoking a place and moment in Colorado that was meaningful to me personally. Divide Forks Flame was inspired by a large fire we built at a campsite on a cliff, and the energy of the flames and sparks. Lakeside is more of a gentle walk, feeding ducks in the early morning. Craig Prelude is a pensive piece about a time spent at the Craig Hospital. The final number depicts collared lizards skittering over the rocks of the Colorado National Monument as I hike to Independence Monument. Special thanks to Daniel Nykamp, who is the featured performer in the audio recordings included below.

Children's Games

Children’s Games is a set of six brief duets for Oboe and Bassoon, each one a whimsical take on a children’s activity. The movements are Relay Race, Dress-up, Bird Watching, Free Play, Nap Time, and Jumping. The prices were writing for William Aikens and Jeffrey McCray, faculty at Colorado Mesa University, and premiered by them at the 2025 IDRS conference at Butler University in Indianapolis.

Frost and Fire

Frost and Fire is a work for Bassoon and Piano, inspired by the short story of the same name by Ray Bradbury. The piece traces the life of Sim, as he struggles to live, and ultimately save humanity by reaching the spaceship that brought people to his inhospitable planet, allowing them to escape. The work was premiered by Jeffrey McCray, with the composer at the piano, at the 2025 IDRS conference at Butler University.

The Dinosaurs

Italo Calvino was one of Italy’s great authors. I have always been drawn to his whimsical, colorful writing. For this musical work, alongside “The Aquatic Uncle” and “The Origin of Birds,” I was inspired by his collection of stories, Cosmicomics. His stories follow characters through times of major change in the universe.

For “Dinosaurs”, the story takes place as our main character, a dinosaur, longs for the time when Dinosaurs reigned supreme all over the world. The New Ones don’t understand the glory of those days. They don’t even recognize him as a dinosaur. He joins their herd for a while, helping them with his enormous strength, but never being fully accepted. Eventually he sees the Dinosaurs’ influence on the present day, and finds some peace. The dinosaurs are represented by an angular 7/8 theme, while the New Ones have a jauntier theme in 4/4  time.

The three musical works of the Cosmicomics Trilogy were written for the 2024 IDRS International Conference in Flagstaff, AZ, and premiered by the composer at the piano,  with Dr. William Aikens, oboe, and Dr. Jeffrey McCray, bassoon.

The Origin of Birds

Italo Calvino was one of Italy’s great authors. I have always been drawn to his whimsical, colorful writing. For this musical work, alongside “Dinosaurs” and “The Aquatic Uncle,” I was inspired by his collection of stories, Cosmicomics. His stories follow characters through times of major change in the universe.

For “The Origin of Birds”, the story explores the surprise of the appearance of birds in evolution, and how unlike they were from all creatures that came before. The story begins with the appearance of the Archeopteryx, and traces the appearance of all manner of very strange winged creatures. The narrator tells us the story by describing imaginary cartoon panels that would illustrate the story for us.

The three musical works of the Cosmicomics Trilogy were written for the 2024 IDRS International Conference in Flagstaff, AZ, and premiered by the composer at the piano,  with Dr. William Aikens, oboe, and Dr. Jeffrey McCray, bassoon.

The Aquatic Uncle

For this musical work, alongside “Dinosaurs” and “The Origin of Birds,” I was inspired by his collection of stories, Cosmicomics. His stories follow characters through times of major change in the universe.

For “The Aquatic Uncle”, the story has three main characters, so I thought it would work perfectly for trio. The bassoon portrays our narrator, Qfwfq, whose family has recently evolved to become land creatures, but their backwards uncle, N’ba N’ga (represented by the piano,) chooses to remain a fish, despite his relatives’ best efforts to convince him that life on land is better. The oboe represents the beautiful, agile land creature Lla, who Qfwfq becomes smitten with. A very strange inter-species love triangle ensues. You can use your imagination as you listen to the musical representation!

Three Pieces from Opus 12

Many years ago I heard a wonderful performance on the devilishly difficult Prokofiev Scherzo, opus 12 #10 by a talented young girl in a piano competition. It always stitch in my head, and eventually I got the idea to arrange several of these pieces for violin and cello. Each of them has their own quirky character, from the lumber Allemande, to the Humorous Scherzo (which Prokofiev also arranged for four bassoon!) to the incredible virtuosity of the final Scherzo.

The Heights

The Heights could refer to Washington Heights, where you enter Manhattan over the George Washington Bridge, or Jackson Heights in Queens, where I raised my children. Both are places I lived in New York City. More generally, this piece is about the activity and emotions of my life in New York City. I wrote the Heights just after moving to Colorado, following twenty-five years of living in New York.

Kayenta Contemplations

Kayenta Contmeplations was inspired by a camping trip I took with my daughter at the Colorado Monument. The first movement, Reflection, portrays the evening of arrival, a peaceful evening by a small lake, spent catching frogs. The second movement, Obtrusion, takes place after sunset with the appearance of mosquitos and other bugs. The third movement, Repose, is the gorgeous sunrise over the lake the next morning.

Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 33, #5 & #7

Sergei Rachmaninov was one of the world’s greatest pianists, but after I heard a friend play his arrangement of one of the most famous violin pieces by Fritz Kreisler, I decided I had to turn the tables. I have had fun arranging and playing two of Rachmaninov’s piano etudes on the violin. They are challenging, but I think they work well as virtuoso violin pieces

Flow

Flow is a violin duet that began it’s life as one of my duets for violin and oboe. It has a mostly mellow vibe in 7/8 time, with a lyrical melody over the “flow” of rolling sixteenth notes. In this version the parts can blend more, and I was able to distribute the material more equally than in the original.

Oboe Caprice

Caprice for Oboe and Piano was composed at Lake Tahoe in the summer of 2019 to perform with Dr. William Aikens at Colorado Mesa University. It was a wonderful collaboration, and I was able to interest Kathy Greenbank, longtime Principal Oboist at the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in performing it as well. Both players do a wonderful job, and bring out different musical details in the piece.

Fractured Views is a trio for Flue, Violin, and Cello about conversation. We all communicate with many different people, loved ones who we agree or disagree with. Sometimes we get through to someone and can work together, sometimes we don't listen well. Despite this, we need each other. I tried to conveyed many ways of communicating in piece, some agreeable, others difficult

July

July for String Quartet was written when I still lived in New York City and my daughters were young. It was like another world to have time at the beautiful Lake Tahoe in the summer, seeing the clear water, sitting on the rocks. We found a spot where they could climb on and under the rocks by the side of the lake on a sunny day, and then stay to watch the sunset, not a care in the world.

Lambert Concerto

Elgar's Andante and March

For String Orchestra
Elgar’s Andante and March was taken from a set of pieces by Edward Elgar for violin and piano that I used to play with my daughter when she was a young violin student. I appreciated that a young violinist could play music that had beautiful harmonies to enjoy. I arranged the first and last pieces of the Elgar set for a concert by the string orchestra at Colorado Mesa University, which they performed without a conductor. The pieces bring back fond memories of my daughter’s youthful enthusiasm for the violin.

Battalia

For String Orchestra
Battalia by Heinrich Biber was written in 1673 and depicts a series of military scenes. It begins with the entry march of the soldiers, and includes a spirited dance, and even a battle! Although this piece was written before J. S. Bach was even born, it has many moments that are still considered modern today. In the battle scene, the players are asked to use snap pizzicati, hundreds of years before Bela Bartok became famous for using this technique in his music.

With this arrangement, even student orchestras can enjoy Biber’s bright tunes and powerful action scenes. I have enjoyed using this piece to teach my own students how to play in the Baroque style, and my students have been excited to use their imagination and musical skill to bring Biber’s drama to life!
